Heritage Refurbishment: Leigh Town Hall from the archive

From the Archive: Breathing New Life into the Grade II Listed Leigh Town Hall

Some projects leave a lasting impression, and our heritage refurbishment of the Grade II listed Leigh Town Hall is certainly one of them.

Completed in partnership with Wigan Council as part of the National Lottery Heritage Fund-backed Revealing Wigan Archives project, this prestigious scheme combined sensitive restoration with the creation of modern facilities that will preserve and celebrate the borough’s history for generations to come.

The History

Originally constructed in the early 1900s, Leigh Town Hall is one of the borough’s most recognisable civic buildings. Working within such an important heritage asset required a careful balance between protecting its historic character and delivering facilities fit for modern public use.

Our works formed part of a major transformation that created a new permanent home for Wigan’s archive collections, including purpose-built archive storage, conservation facilities, exhibition space and a modern public search room. The refurbishment also restored and refreshed significant parts of the historic building while ensuring it could continue serving the community well into the future.

Our Task

Projects like Leigh Town Hall demand far more than construction expertise. They require an understanding of listed buildings, sympathetic restoration techniques, close collaboration with conservation stakeholders and meticulous planning to protect historic fabric throughout every stage of the works.

At Carefoot, we take great pride in delivering heritage projects that respect the past while creating spaces that meet today’s needs. Over the years, we have successfully completed works on Grade I and Grade II listed buildings, including town halls, libraries, churches, museums and healthcare facilities, always working to preserve the character and significance of these important landmarks.

As interest continues to grow in the refurbishment and regeneration of historic buildings across the North West, we’re proud to bring the experience, craftsmanship and collaborative approach needed to deliver these complex projects successfully.

The Future

Whether restoring a listed public building, adapting a heritage asset for modern use or carrying out sensitive refurbishment works, Carefoot understands what it takes to protect our built heritage while creating buildings that continue to serve future generations.
